In Which You Decide to Homeschool

It’s a huge decision. Here are a few considerations that factored into our decision to take the homeschool path.

I never planned on homeschooling. Truth be told, I never really thought about having kids until several years into married life. As an academic, the trajectory of my life included plans to one day become a college professor. But when I met my husband, during my final year in Seminary, things shifted for me.

I saw learning in its broader scope, outside of the four walls of the classroom. Tim, the lead singer of a nomad band traveling the world, invited me into his world of learning, which was quite different from mine. And I, in turn, invited him into my world of learning.

Since then, Tim has been on the academic path, finishing up his PhD at King’s College London. I, on the other hand, have focused my education more within the four walls of our home.

When the pixies came along, the decision to homeschool was not a hard one. We had been exposed to it through several of our friends, but most importantly our family. Tim’s older sister, also an educator, had been homeschooling her three boys for several years before Lyric, our oldest, was to enter Kindergarten. When I saw her three boys, their maturity and wisdom versus other boys their age, I knew that was what I wanted for our girls as well.
